7. ... THERE’S MORE ...

As mentioned earlier, this account was not intended  initially to extend beyond Arthur as regards Charles’ offspring, however, Christopher Barends (cousin) has undertaken a huge research project, including having a DNA test with an even more remote member of the family to prove their Barends line, and has uncovered a wealth of ancestral information “Pre-Charles“ which is intriguing. If one doesn’t have time immediately to read the text, the collection of pictures and copied documents is well worth a diversion.

Christopher has generously agreed that I can include a link to his website - For this, click the ”Barends Ancestry” button (Right).

As a ”sneak-peek”, following is the “Origins of the Barends Family in South Africa”

  • Johann Godlieb Barends (born about 1720 In Germany) came out to the Cape about 1750 as a Master Bricklayer. He married Anna Elizabeth Pieterse van die Kaap. He is the Progenitor of our Barends family in South Africa.
  • Their son Jan George Barends (1760-1817) married Johanna Catharina Sesselaar, the daughter of a Swiss-born immigrant and a local wife.
  • Their son was Godlieb Andreas Barends (1786-1833) who married the freed slave Jacoba Petronella Dianas van Bengal.
  • Their son was William Haynes Wade Barends (1821-1901) who married Charlotta Frederica Serrurier.
  • And finally their son was Charles Samuel Barends (1848-1936).

So I (Christopher) guess the easiest way to think about it would be to say Charles Samuel‘s grandfather was Godlieb Andreas Barends. Godlieb’s grandfather was Johan Godlieb Barends who was the first member of the family to arrive at the Cape from Germany.
